2011-2012 Cracking Christmas Carnival

In this CAS activity I reflect all three parts, Creativity, Action and Service. This is because not only did I design stalls and decorations, I also ran meetings with student representatives from each class. Lastly all proceeds of the fair went to Operation Santa Claus, a charity.

During the activity I took on a more dominant role than last year, actually taking part in deciding the logistics of the fair, as well as choosing which stall suggestions from the classes were considered acceptable. One of the biggest difficulties I encountered was the choosing of the stalls, however with an open-minded we managed to pull through.

The IB CAS learning outcome I achieved was the 7th outcome " I have considered implications of my actions".  As judges of stalls and logistics the Student Council President and I had to co-operate with teachers as well as students to get the most safe, satisfying and profitable fair. The problems were that teachers believed in certain rules and restraints for stalls, however students wanted their creativity to flow. In the end we had to decide how far creativity could flow in order to please both sides to a certain extent.

Inline Hockey Volunteering Reflection

In this activity I reflected Creativity because I decorated and set up the raffle ticket booth, designing all the prizes in an appealing manner. I also reflected service as I ran the stall and served the local community.

I hoped to become a better salesperson, and I did achieve this as I experienced many difficulties with this task. One of the the difficulties included the periods of time when there were large masses of people that came to look at the prizes, some only spoke mandarin. However I overcame this by finding a system that kept the people in order as well as kept the prizes safe.

During the volunteering activity I achieved the first learning outcome " I have increased my awareness of my strengths and areas of growth" because I learnt I can be a good saleperson, however my chinese needs to improve to further communicate with people.

Another learning outcome achieved is the fifth learning outcome of " I have shown perseverance and commitment in my activities" because I had to stand by the stall despite the long hours and horrible situations that we had to deal with.

Lastly I achieved the last learning outcome " I have developed new skills or increased expertise in an established area" because I learned new people organization skills as well as became a better salesperson.

CAS project reflection

The CAS project reflects all 3 creativity, action and service. During the CAS Project we had to plan and design games and speeches that revolve around the topic of Sustainability. After designing and planning we needed to speak in front of the whole school and present on the topic of sustainability, then finally carry out the activities to 4 groups of 50 students for 2 hours.

This project benefited not only the local community but also the global community. This is because we taught the students about how to be environmentally friendly which can help them learn to have a healthier, and greener lifestyle. This helps the global community because if everyone learns to be green, then the whole world can prevent the early coming of global warming. As well as aid the world economy, and lessen landfills, which protects the health of those around them.

The project consisted of researching facts and designing an activity with relation to “travel and traffic sustainability”. As well as present and carry out the activity. This is aimed at the third learning outcome. Together with my partner we created a poster and the obstacle course for the activity which helped us achieve the fourth learning outcome. The last outcomes we aimed to hit was the 6th learning outcome, and because we researched and engaged with pollution and the effect of this on the earth, we engaged with an issue of global importance.

I hoped to become a better organiser, leader, and activity runner, and I did achieve all three, handling the 4 groups of 50 students helped me achieved my aspirations. One of the hardest obstacles I had to face was co-operation with my teammate, however in the end the whole plan still continues successfully, though it took a lot of effort. Another difficulty was controlling certain students, however to overcome this, I figured out a way to get the students to fear and respect me, after that, they behaved to a controllable level.

I learnt I could get students to behave and listen, as well as gain their respect to a certain level. I have become a better communicator as well as a result of this project. This project benefited the students because they became more aware of the changes they can make to help the environment, and it benefits the whole population as hopefully the students have learnt to become more environmentally friendly, therefore saving the world for future generations.

During the CAS project I achieved the third learning outcome " planned and initiated activities" as the whole CAS project is about planning and running activities and presentations for the whole student body. Planning included brainstorming ideas of a general topic for this activity, as well as planning strategies to get work finished. Moreover after planning we had to carry out the activities that we planned, for example the interactive game for the 200 students.

I have also achieved the fourth learning outcome " worked collaboratively with others", during the activity I had to work with teammates to create a presentation as well as an activity. Moreover work with teammates to run the activity. Together with classmates we brainstormed the title for this project, and together created the final script and presentation. Together we managed to finish the project and carry it out for the whole school.

Another learning outcome I achieved is the 6th " engaged with issues of global importance" because Sustainability is a global issue that needs to be addressed. The world cannot survive any longer if we continue our rate of fuel usage, food wastage, and not recycling. Presenting and looking into this issue is engaging with it.

Creativity:
Poster - 1 hour
Planning and designing game - 2 hours
Writing speech - 1 hour

Action:
Running game + presentation - 1.5 hours
Running for resources - 0.5 hours
Moving students ( rotation) - 20 mins

Service:
Presenting about sustainability ( presentation + game presentation) - 2 hours

Total Hours
C: 4 hours
A: 2 hours 20 mins
S: 2 hours

Cheerleading reflection

In this activity I reflected action because I progressively planned, ran and organized the whole cheerleading squad, and also reflected creativity because I created the cheerleading routine.
Previously I hoped to become a better leader, planner and teacher throughout the activity, and I was successful in doing so. One of the problems that I encountered was the inability of some cheerleaders to come to practices, however I overcame this by recording steps and lessons and uploading them on youtube so they could practice on there on at home.
I learnt that videos are helpful in teaching and that certain techniques are suitable for certain people, in other words everyone has their own optimum learning techniques.
During the activity I achieved the 3rd IB CAS learning outcome “ planned and initiated activities” because during the activity I had to plan the practices and run it, making sure everyone was organized and prepared. I also achieved the fourth learning outcome “ worked collaboratively with others” because I had to work with the fellow cheerleaders to complete the whole cheerleading routine, as well as collaborate with other dancers to create the routine. The last learning outcome that I achieved was the 5th learning outcome “ shown perseverance and commitment on your activities”, because we only had a limited amount of time to create the routine, teach and practice the routine. Therefore I had to be present and mentally committed to each and every practice.

Arts Evening reflection

During Arts Evening I reflected Creativity and Action, this is because I played and practiced the Guzheng for the concert, as well as helped plan out the itinerary for the program, helped arranged students and helped design the hall in which arts evening took place.
For this activity I hoped to become a better performer, and I am a better performer although I still felt a little bit nervous whilst playing, however I tried a new method of calming down to overcome the difficulty. I also learnt that the people around you can affect your behavior significantly, for example, if everyone is nervous, then everyone becomes noisy and jumpy.
During this activity I achieved the 2nd learning outcome “ undertaken new challenges or an extension of an existing one” because overcoming the fear of performing in public is a new experience and a new challenge to me, and I did overcome the fear of performing.

Model United Nations reflection

During the Model United Nations activity I reflected creativity, action and service because not only did I create persuasive arguments, I also helped plan strategies and organize the whole group’s actions. Moreover I reflected service because with the succession of MUN ideas we help serve the global community as well as the school community because we help give the school more significance.
Prior to MUN I hoped to become a clearer and more confident speaker, as well as a better leader, and during the activity I am a better speaker and leader. Although I faced many time clashes and other organization issues, I overcame them through proper planning and collaboration with fellow delegates.
Through the activity I realized I can be a confident speaker through practice and proper planning prior to speaking, as well as te importance of co-operative colleagues. I can apply the skills learnt during MUN in real life as I want to be a teacher in the future, because of my improved speaking skills, I can also become a more confident teacher.
Working in the Model United Nations has enabled me to achieve the 6th IB CAS learning outcome “ engaged with issues of global importance”  , this is because MUN is all about solving the current Global issues, and crisis. Working with other “countries” to help come up with a resolution/solution that can be agreed on with the majority of countries in the world, therefore ensuring a peaceful chain of actions to solve the world’s problems.
